artist statement and inspiration

The series of circular forms in Crocodile Rock has a density and depth, which I created through multiple processes of layering paint, pastel, and oils. In turn, the circles appear to have a palpable texture to them so that the viewer can imagine what it would feel like to run their hand across the skin of a crocodile.

Crocodiles are prolific throughout Kakadu and synonymous with the area. The vibrant blue and purple colour palettes indicate their power and superior position in the natural food chain.

Furthermore, “Rock” in the title also emphasises crocodiles’ place in the Northern Territory, as they are the stable rock of the land, tough, strong and resilient.

This stunning original artwork on canvas is from the Lara’s latest body of work created this year. The work captures the life force that bubbles and bursts invisibly all around us, and burns just as brightly in our body and minds even as we sit still; especially as we sit still. Celebrating our creative energy Lara’s paintings are a reminder that renewal is a constant available to all of us. Her signature organic motifs are conjured into shape with rope and other natural materials and rendered in swirls of ink up to 40 layers deep.

“I create landscapes of life force. tapping into vibrations and responding to the moment."
